The vibrant red and green palette is the classic hallmark of Christmas, seen everywhere from twinkling tree lights to festive wrapping paper. These colours aren't just decorative – they're steeped in centuries of history and symbolism that give them special significance during the festive season.
Ancient Origins
The tradition began long before Christmas was celebrated. Ancient cultures marking the winter solstice used evergreen plants like holly and mistletoe to decorate their homes. The green of these plants, which stayed alive through harsh winter, symbolised eternal life and the promise of spring's return. The bright red berries of the holly bush represented life and vitality.
Christian Symbolism
When Christianity spread, these existing symbols were adapted with new meaning. Green continued to represent everlasting life, but now through Jesus Christ. Red took on powerful new symbolism, representing the blood of Christ shed during his crucifixion. This is perfectly captured in the holly plant, where the sharp leaves are said to represent the crown of thorns and the red berries, the drops of blood.
Victorian Influence
The association was firmly cemented in the Victorian era. The very first Christmas cards, printed in the 1840s, were mass-produced with festive red and green designs featuring holly, robins, and rosy-cheeked families. This, combined with literature from authors like Charles Dickens, helped popularise the colour scheme. Later, in the 1930s, Coca-Cola's famous advertising campaign featuring a jolly Santa Claus in a bright red suit further solidified red and green as the definitive colours of Christmas in the modern imagination.
A Timeless Tradition
Ultimately, the combination of deep historical roots, powerful religious symbolism, and their naturally vibrant and complementary appearance has made red and green the enduring and traditional colours of Christmas.
