But knowing what to look for — and what to avoid — can make all the difference between a treasure and a disappointment. Here's what every new collector needs to know before they buy.
🔍 1. Check the Gilding
One of the first things to examine on any piece of bone china is the gilding — those beautiful gold accents on rims, handles, and patterns. Run your eye carefully around every gilded edge and look for rubbing, fading, or loss.
Gilding that has been rubbed away is one of the most common signs of wear on vintage china, and it significantly affects both the appearance and the value of a piece. A little light rubbing on a base or foot rim is generally acceptable, but heavy loss to the rim or pattern is worth factoring into your decision.
What to look for: Dull patches, uneven gold tone, or areas where the gold has worn away entirely.
🎵 2. The Ping Test — Your Best Friend
This is the trick every seasoned collector swears by, and once you know it, you'll use it every single time.
Hold the cup or piece on an open palm — don't grip it — and gently tap or flick the rim with your fingernail.
- A clear, ringing tone = the piece is structurally sound. ✅
- A dull thud = there is damage inside the piece — a crack, a repair, or a stress fracture that may not be visible to the naked eye. ❌
This simple test can save you from buying a damaged piece that looks perfect on the outside. It works on cups, saucers, plates, and most hollow forms.
🔎 3. Look for Cracks and Crazing
Hold the piece up to natural light and look carefully across the surface.
Cracks are structural breaks in the china itself — these are serious and will affect both the integrity and the value of the piece. Even a hairline crack is worth noting.
Crazing refers to the fine network of lines that can appear in the glaze over time. It looks like a very fine spider web across the surface. Crazing is extremely common in vintage bone china and is caused by the glaze and the body expanding and contracting at different rates over decades. Light crazing is generally considered acceptable by most collectors, but heavy crazing can harbour staining and bacteria, making the piece unsuitable for use.
What to look for: Hold the piece at an angle to the light and tilt it slowly — cracks and crazing will catch the light differently to the surrounding glaze.

Repairs are more common than you might think, and a well-done repair can be very difficult to spot — but not impossible.
Run your fingertip gently around rims, handles, and spouts. A repaired area will often feel slightly different in texture — smoother, slightly raised, or with a faint ridge. Under UV light (a small blacklight torch is a handy tool for any collector), repairs will often fluoresce and show up clearly.
Pay particular attention to:
- Handles — a common break point
- Spouts on teapots and jugs — frequently chipped or repaired
- Rims — chips are often filled and repainted
A disclosed repair at the right price is perfectly acceptable — just make sure you know what you're buying.
📋 5. Read the Backstamp
Turn the piece over and look at the backstamp — the maker's mark on the base. This tells you who made it, and often when.
Backstamps changed over the years as companies updated their branding, which means they can be used to date a piece quite accurately. Familiarise yourself with the backstamps of the makers you love — Royal Albert, Royal Doulton, Shelley, Wedgwood, Aynsley, and others all have well-documented histories.
A genuine backstamp is your assurance of authenticity. Be cautious of pieces with no mark, a very faint mark, or a mark that doesn't match the style of the piece.
