You've found the perfect piece — a gorgeous Royal Albert trio, a hand-painted Aynsley vase, or a rare Royal Doulton figurine. Now comes the part that many collectors overlook: storing it properly so it stays in beautiful condition for years to come.
Whether you're building a display collection or carefully packing pieces away, how you store your collectables matters just as much as how you choose them. Here's everything you need to know.
🏠 1. Display vs. Storage — Know the Difference
There are two scenarios for your collectables: pieces on display and pieces in storage. Each requires a different approach.
Display pieces need protection from dust, sunlight, and accidental knocks. Stored pieces need protection from pressure, moisture, temperature fluctuations, and pests. Getting both right will keep your collection in excellent condition.
☀️ 2. Keep Them Out of Direct Sunlight
UV light is one of the most damaging forces for vintage collectables. Over time, direct sunlight can:
- Fade delicate hand-painted patterns and colours
- Cause gilding to dull and lose its lustre
- Weaken and discolour any paper labels or original packaging
Position display cabinets away from windows, or use UV-filtering glass in your display cabinet if sunlight is unavoidable. Even indirect light through a window can cause gradual fading over years.
🌡️ 3. Avoid Temperature and Humidity Extremes
Bone china and porcelain are sensitive to dramatic changes in temperature and humidity. Fluctuations cause the material to expand and contract, which over time can lead to crazing, stress fractures, and weakening of existing repairs.
Avoid storing collectables:
- In garages or sheds where temperatures swing dramatically
- Near heating vents, fireplaces, or air conditioning units
- In damp basements or areas prone to moisture
A stable, climate-controlled indoor environment is ideal — a spare bedroom or dedicated display room is perfect.
📦 4. Wrapping for Storage — Do It Properly
If you're packing pieces away, wrapping them correctly is essential. A few minutes of care now can prevent heartbreak later.
What to use:
- Acid-free tissue paper — the gold standard for wrapping fine china and porcelain. It won't react with glazes or gilding over time.
- Bubble wrap — use as a secondary layer over tissue paper, never directly against the piece. The texture of bubble wrap can mark delicate surfaces.
- Foam padding or foam pouches — excellent for figurines and pieces with protruding elements like handles or spouts.
What to avoid:
- Newspaper — the ink can transfer and stain
- Regular tissue paper or paper towel — can scratch and is not acid-free
- Plastic bags — trap moisture and can cause condensation damage
🗃️ 5. Pack Smart — Cups, Saucers, and Plates
The way you pack matters as much as what you pack with.
- Cups: Never stack cups inside each other — this puts pressure on the handles and rims. Wrap each cup individually and store upright or on their sides with padding between them.
- Saucers and plates: Store vertically (on their edges) rather than stacked flat. Stacking puts enormous pressure on the bottom pieces and is a leading cause of chips and cracks in storage. Use plate dividers or foam separators between each piece.
- Figurines: Wrap each element carefully, paying special attention to fingers, flowers, and other fine details. Store upright and ensure nothing can shift and press against the piece.
- Teapots and jugs: Remove lids and wrap separately. Pack the spout with a small amount of tissue paper to protect it.
☕ 6. How to Display a Group of Cups Beautifully
Grouping cups together is one of the most effective ways to create a stunning display — but a little thought goes a long way.
Odd numbers work best. Groups of three, five, or seven feel more natural and visually balanced than even numbers. A trio of cups in complementary patterns is a classic starting point.
Vary the heights. Use small plate stands, tiered shelving, or even a stack of books under a cloth to create different levels within your grouping. This draws the eye across the whole display rather than landing on one flat line.
Mix pattern with plain. If you have several highly patterned cups, anchor the group with one or two simpler pieces. This gives the eye somewhere to rest and makes the patterned pieces pop even more.
Face them thoughtfully. Turn cups so their most decorative side faces forward, and angle them slightly so the handle is visible — it adds depth and shows the craftsmanship.
Keep saucers in the display. A cup without its saucer can look unfinished. If you have matching saucers, prop them upright behind or beside the cup using a small plate stand for a polished, intentional look.
Group by maker or palette. Displaying all your Royal Albert together, or grouping by colour family (all soft pinks, all cobalt blue), creates a cohesive, curated feel rather than a cluttered one.
📋 7. Label Everything
This one sounds obvious, but it's easy to skip when you're in a hurry — and you'll regret it later.
Label each wrapped piece or box with:
- What the piece is (maker, pattern, item type)
- Condition notes
- Where it came from and what you paid (useful for insurance and resale)
A simple spreadsheet or even a handwritten card tucked into the box is all you need. Future you will be very grateful.
🔒 8. Consider Insurance for Valuable Pieces
If you have pieces of significant value — rare figurines, complete sets, or pieces in exceptional condition — it's worth checking whether your home and contents insurance covers collectables. Many standard policies have limits on individual items or categories like antiques and collectables.
A specialist collectables or fine arts insurance policy can give you peace of mind, especially as your collection grows.
🧹 9. Dust Regularly — But Carefully
Dust is the enemy of a beautiful display, but cleaning bone china incorrectly can cause damage.
- Use a soft, dry brush (a clean, soft-bristled paintbrush or dedicated china brush works beautifully) to dust figurines and pieces with texture or relief detail.
- For smooth surfaces, a soft microfibre cloth is ideal.
- Never use abrasive cloths, scouring pads, or harsh cleaning products on vintage china.
- If washing is needed, use warm (not hot) water and a tiny amount of mild dish soap. Never put vintage bone china in the dishwasher — the heat and detergents will strip gilding and damage glazes.
