The Festive Tale of Christmas in July: A Midsummer Holiday
Have you ever found yourself craving the joy and warmth of Christmas in the middle of summer? Well, you're not alone! Christmas in July is a real thing, celebrated by many around the world. But where did this quirky tradition come from? Let's unwrap the history of this festive midsummer holiday.
The Origins of a Summer Christmas
The exact origin of Christmas in July is a bit of a mystery, but several key moments helped to popularise the idea:
- Early Seeds: Some say the term "Christmas in July" was inspired by the French opera Werther in 1892.
- Keystone Camp Magic: One popular story traces the tradition back to Keystone Camp, a girls' camp in North Carolina. In 1933, camp co-founder Fannie Holt decided to bring the Christmas spirit to her campers. They celebrated with carols, a decorated tree, and even a Secret Santa exchange!
- Going National: In 1935, the journal Recreation shared the story of Keystone Camp's Christmas in July, spreading the idea further. The 1940 film Christmas in July then cemented the concept in the public's imagination.
- A Church Connection: In 1942, a church in Washington, D.C., held a Christmas in July service, complete with carols and a themed sermon. This was inspired by another church that collected Christmas gifts early to allow time to distribute them to missions around the world.
- Wartime Cheer: During World War II, in 1944 and 1945, the U.S. Post Office, military officials, and the advertising industry teamed up to promote early Christmas mailing for servicemen overseas, further popularising the summer celebration.
