Every second Sunday in May, kitchens smell a little better, tables are set with more care, and Mums across Australia get the day they deserve. But where did it all begin?
One Woman's Legacy
In 1908, Anna Jarvis held the first official Mother's Day service in Grafton, West Virginia, as a tribute to her late mother. By 1914 it was a U.S. national holiday, and the tradition spread worldwide. Ironically, Anna later spent her years trying to undo it — she wanted presence, not presents.
Older Roots
Ancient Greeks celebrated Rhea, Romans honoured Cybele, and 16th-century England had Mothering Sunday with simnel cake and a trip home.
